Celebration of World Soil Day 2025 Strengthening National Sustainable Land Management
KLANG, 5 December 2025 – The 2025 World Soil Day celebration took place at the KSL Esplanade Hotel, Klang, inaugurated by the Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, YB Dato’ Sri Arthur Joseph Kurup.
This year’s welcome has a global theme “Healthy Soil for a Prosperous City”in line with the country’s efforts to face the challenges of urbanization, climate change and ensuring sustainable food security.
In his speech, Dato’ Sri Arthur emphasized that land is a national strategic asset that not only supports the rural agricultural sector, but also plays an important role in urban ecosystems through controlling microclimate, filtering water sources, storing carbon and community-scale food production.
He also emphasized the government’s commitment through the 2026 APBN, including the allocation of RM100 million for the rehabilitation of problematic rice fields as well as RM20 million for the provision of foliar fertilizer and soil fertility materials for the benefit of 6,400 rice farmers across the country.
The text of the opening speech was read by YBhg. Dato’ Nor Sam bint Alwi, Director General of Agriculture.
YBhg. Dato’ Nor Sam also emphasized the role of the Department of Agriculture as a leader in managing the country’s land resources. Through soil series studies, monitoring soil quality based on geospatial technology, developing digital databases and providing technical guidelines for sustainable land management, the Ministry of Agriculture continues to encourage productivity in the food crop sector.
He also emphasized that problems such as loose soil in rice fields require scientific understanding and data-based action to avoid yield loss and disruption to planting schedules.
The Council also awarded the participants of the mySOILDOCTOR Program in the North Zone and East Zone, namely farmers trained by the Department of Agriculture to carry out soil analysis and cultivate land scientifically in the field. This program produces field technical partners who act as “Soil Doctors”, helping communities manage land sustainably, optimizing the use of inputs and increasing crop productivity.
Deputy Minister YB also praised the dedication of the participants who were described as national heroes for their contributions to sustainable agriculture and food security.
This celebration also shows the commitment to strategic cooperation between the Department of Agriculture and academic institutions such as the University of Malaya UM Soil Doctoral Program (UMSDP)which combines scientific research with field practice to encourage innovation in national land management.
In an effort to mainstream sustainable land management across the country, the Department of Agriculture will continue to strengthen the Urban Agriculture Program to support community food security; utilizing digital technology and land databases for more accurate crop planning; expanding training in soil engineering, diagnostics and sustainable soil management; as well as increasing cooperation between government agencies, universities, the private sector and farming communities.
The celebration of World Soil Day in 2025 further strengthens the message that land is the foundation of life, a source of sustenance and the heart of the nation’s agricultural development. The Department of Agriculture is committed to continuing to lead sustainable land management to ensure every inch of land remains productive, supports the development of prosperous cities and ensures the future of the nation’s food security.
