Hajj Wada ‘, which literally means “Farewell Hajj”, is the only pilgrimage carried out by the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu’ alaihi wasallam during his life. This Hajj was also a marker of his separation with Muslims, because not long afterwards, he died. A number of signs of approaching the death of the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam had been seen before this big event occurred.
One sign is mentioned in the historical hadith of Imam Ahmad, which tells about the Prophet Muhammad Sallallaahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam sent his friend, Mu’adz bin Jabal, to Yemen. He says:
“O Mu’adz, you might not see me anymore this year. You can only pass through my mosque and grave.”
Mu’adz bin Jabal cried because he felt that this was a farewell greeting from the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam which he loved so much (HR. Ahmad).
In the same year, the tenth year of Hijri, the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam increasingly multiplied worship and busy with the affairs of the hereafter. One example is when the month of Ramadan arrives. In a history mentioned by Imam An-Nasa’i, the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam carried out i’tikaf for twenty days. Even though in the previous Ramadan, he only did it for the past ten days. He also began to reduce the intensity of meeting and talking to the people around him, so that they began to get used to his absence later.
Another main sign is a change in the habit of reading the Qur’an with the angel Gabriel. In previous years, Gabriel only listened to the reading of the Prophet Sallallaahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam once during the month of Ramadan. But that year, he was heard by Gabriel twice.
In the month of Dzulhijjah in the same year, the Prophet Muhammad Sallallaahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam prepared to make a pilgrimage. With friends and Muslims, the number of pilgrims at that time was estimated to reach hundreds of thousands of people. This pilgrimage is the only pilgrimage carried out by the Prophet Muhammad Sallallaahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam throughout his life, and is an important moment in Muslim history.
Pilgrimage starts from Medina at the end of the month of Dzulqa’dah. The Prophet Sallallaahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam left after Dzuhur and arrived at the Dzil HulaiFah area in front of Asr. There, he and his entourage did the obligatory prayer of Qashar, and wore ihram clothes. The next trip to Mecca lasts for a day.
After arriving in Mecca, the Prophet Sallallaahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam immediately carried out a series of pilgrims, Tawaf in the Holy Mosque, Sa’i between Shafa and Marwa Hill, then headed for Mina on the 8th of Dzulhijjah to spend the night there to salary. After that, he and the pilgrims continued their journey to the Arafat field to carry out the wukuf.
In the field of Arafat, when the sun slipped west, the Prophet Sallallaahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam presented a very touching sermon and important message. At the end of his sermon, he said:
“You will be asked about me, then what is your answer?”
The friends replied: “We testify that you have sent brochures, fulfilling trust, and suggesting.”
So he lifted his index finger to the sky and pointed it to his friends and said:
“O Allah, watch, Allah pay attention, O Allah, watch it.” (HR. Muslim)
The next day, when he threw the jumrah in Mina, the Prophet Sallallaahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam returned the sermon. In a sermon narrated by Imam Bukhari, he said:
“Indeed, your blood, treasure, and honor are holy, as the holys today, in this city, and this month. Until you meet your Rabb. Didn’t I convey?”
The friends answered, “Right, you have sent it.”
Then he extended:
“Let the people present convey to those who are not present. Because it could be that the person delivered better than those who hear directly. Do not be back to become infidels after my death, where some of you cut off the neck of some others.”
After completing the toss of jumrah, he shaved his hair and returned to Mecca to do Tawaf Ifadhah. After doing the midday prayer, he returned to Mina and spent the night there.
In the next sermon at Mina, he emphasized the values of unity and brotherhood among Muslims. He says:
“O human beings, in fact your Lord is one and your father is also one. Know, there is no advantage for the Arabs for non-Arabs, nor for non-Arabs over the Arabs, nor for the red-skinned black, and not the black-skinned black, except with piety.”
He repeated that question, “Don’t I convey it?”
And the friends answered firmly, “Prophet Sallallaahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam was presented.”
This pilgrimage ended with Wada Thawaf ‘on the third day of Tasyrik. After that, the Prophet Sallallaahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam returned to Medina.
This pilgrimage is called “Haji Wada ‘” Because in all of his sermons, the Prophet Sallallaahu’ Alaihi Wasallam repeatedly emphasized that he had sent brochures, gave advice, and fulfilled the belief of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala. In addition, the intensity of the arrival of the angel Gabriel and more focused on worship is a sign that his life in the world is getting closer. Three months after the implementation of Hajj Wada ‘, the Prophet Muhammad Sallallaahu’ Alaihi Wasallam died.
Hajj Wada ‘is not just an ordinary pilgrimage, but a monumental moment that shows the love of the Prophet Sallallaahu’ Alaihi Wasallam to its people, and that is a marker that the Islamic brochure is resolved and sent to humanity.
