Three Noble Tombs at the Nabawi Mosque » Nabawi Mulia

In the center of Madinah Al-Munawwarah, precisely in the sacred complex of the Nabawi Mosque, there is a small room that is very meaningful in the long history of Islam. This room is not an ordinary place. Previously, this place was the private room of the wife of Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam, namely Sayyidah Aisyah Radhiyallahu ‘Anha. In this tiny space, a life full of simplicity and blessing occurs with the noblest human beings on earth.

Now, the room is the final resting place of the leader of the Muslim community, Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam. On the right side of his grave is buried his closest friend and father-in-law, Abu Bakar Ash-Shiddiq Radhiyallahu ‘Anhu. Meanwhile, on the left side of Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, another close friend, Umar bin Khattab Radhiyallahu ‘Anhu, resides.

Quoting from the work of Prof. Dr. HJ Suyuthi in the book History of Islamic CivilizationOn Monday, the 2nd of Rabi’ul Awwal, 11th year of the Hijriyah, the sky of the city of Medina seemed to be shrouded in a cloud of sorrow. Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam breathed his last breath in the lap of his beloved wife, Sayyidah Aisyah Radhiyallahu ‘Anha.

When sadness enveloped the Muslim community, a big question emerged among society: where will the Prophet sallallaahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam be buried?

The answer comes from his own words:

“No prophet was arrested, but rather buried where he was captured.”
“A prophet is not buried except where he died.”
(HR. Tirmidhi)

So it was decided that Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam would be buried in Aisyah Radhiyallahu ‘Anha’s room—the place where he died, as well as the place where he used to sit, rest, and convey revelations from Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala. In that country, his body was buried with great respect and affection from his friends.

The story of the funeral of Abu Bakar Ash-Siddiq Radhiyallahu ‘Anhu
Two years after the departure of Rasulullah SAW, grief hit Medina again. Abu Bakr Ash-Siddiq Radhiyallahu ‘Anhu, the closest friend of the Prophet Shallallahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam and the first caliph of Islam, died at the age of 63. Throughout his life, Abu Bakr was always by the Prophet’s side, including during the historic emigration to Medina. His extraordinary loyalty earned him this title Ash-Siddiq (which confirms the truth of the Prophet).

Before his death, Abu Bakr made a simple but meaningful request:

“Bury me next to the Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and give him peace.”

The request was fulfilled. The land to the right of the grave of Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam was dug up, and Abu Bakar’s body was laid there, next to the lover of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala whom he loved and respected very much.

The story of the death of Umar bin Khattab Radhiyallahu ‘Anhu
Ten years later, it was Umar bin Khattab Radhiyallahu ‘Anhu’s turn to lead the people as caliph. Under his leadership, Islam achieved a golden age and extraordinary territorial expansion. However, death comes inevitably. While leading the morning prayer, Umar was stabbed by a Magian named Abu Lu’lu’ah.

In critical condition, Umar Radhiyallahu ‘Anhu expressed one last wish: he wanted to be buried next to Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam and Abu Bakar Ash-Shiddiq Radhiyallahu ‘Anhu. But there was one catch: the place belonged to Aisyah Radhiyallahu ‘Anha who had kept it for herself.

Umar then sent his son, Abdullah bin Umar Radhiyallahu ‘Anhuma, to ask Aisyah for permission. With wide eyes, Aisyah answered:

“I had kept that place to myself, but today I put Umar before me.”

With full sincere permission, Umar was buried on the left side of the Prophet. So, now the three greatest figures in Islamic history lie side by side in eternal formation: Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam in the middle, Abu Bakr on the right, and Umar on the left.

Location of the Three Noble Tombs
Over time, the Nabawi Mosque underwent various expansions and renovations. Now, the three tombs are in the Nabawi Mosque complex, precisely in the southeast corner (left front of the mosque). Although it is not visible directly because it is in the so-called sacred area Rawdah Asy-SyarifahMuslims from various parts of the world still come to visit with great respect.

The three tombs are now behind a green fence decorated with gold known as Syubbak. Pilgrims usually stand respectfully in front of the fence, then greet the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam and his two companions. Because, as the Prophet promised:

“No one greets me unless Allah returns my soul to me so that I return his greeting to him.”
“No one greets me, unless Allah restores my soul so that I can answer his greeting.”
(HR. Abu Dawud)
