Gig Workers Act 2025 Announced Today – KESUMA
PUTRAJAYA, 31 Dec (Bernama) — Gig Workers Act 2025 [Akta 872] was gazetted today, after receiving Royal Assent on December 16, according to the Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA).
KESUMA in its statement today informed that Law 872 will only come into force on the date approved by the competent Minister and stated clearly in the completed minutes.
In this regard, all provisions in this law cannot be implemented until the effective date is officially announced. Further announcements regarding the effective date of this law will be notified from time to time through KESUMA’s official channels, according to the ministry.
The passing of Law 872 is an important step in the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s labor legal framework, particularly in regulating the burgeoning gig work ecosystem as well as providing a more comprehensive and systematic basis for protection for gig workers in Malaysia.
According to KESUMA, the state gazette will also continue implementation preparations including the development of additional regulations, coordination of governance mechanisms as well as engagement sessions with stakeholders to ensure the implementation of Law 872 is orderly, effective and in line with the realities and needs of the gig work ecosystem.
The National Assembly on September 9 passed the Gig Workers Bill 2025, making new history in protecting the more than 1.2 million gig workers in Malaysia and ending an era of no legal protection for the group.
