Husnudzon or a good attitude is one of the noble morals that is highly recommended in Islamic teachings. This attitude teaches every Muslim to always look at other people with kindness and not be hasty in judging a situation or behavior. In everyday life, husnudzon helps us to protect our hearts from the disease su’udzon (bad prejudice), which often gives rise to misunderstandings, hostility, and even destructive slander.
Islam strictly prohibits its followers from having bad prejudices, as confirmed in the words of Allah Subḥānahu wa Taʿālā in Surah Al-Hujurat verse 12:
O you who believe, avoid much suspicion, for some suspicion is a sin, and do not spy, and do not backbite each other. If one of you eats the flesh of a dead brother, he will hate it and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving, Most Merciful.
Arabic Latin: Cereament Yā ayuhal-laūna āmanibūamanujtanibū, inmawn mini, put-ẓ-ẓ-ẓ-ẓ-ẓ-ẓani dii ẓ urssūigas, wagtab ba’ဍā(n), is amyuliau ayiqueuk. yan hyi la lawk, wattquallīh(a), innalangqullāh(a), Innallāha tawwwwangwangwawwīm(un).
It means: O believers, stay away from many prejudices! It’s true, some prejudices are sins. Don’t find fault with others and don’t gossip about others. Is there anyone among you who likes to eat the flesh of his dead brother? Of course you feel disgusted. Fear God! Indeed, Allah is Most Accepting of Repentance and Most Merciful.
This verse clearly describes the dangers of su’udzon which not only have a negative impact on other people, but also on oneself. Bad prejudice can lead a person to sin and damage relationships between people, which ultimately destroys the social order in society.
In the book The Path to Reaching Divine Blessing published by Arabic Language and Literature, UIN Sunan Gunung Djati, explains that term husnudzon comes from two words in Arabic, namely Husnu which means “good” and az-zan which means “prejudice”. Linguistically, husnudzon means having a good opinion. In terms of terms, husnudzon is a mental attitude that encourages a person to see things from a positive side, provide good judgment, and not be quick to accuse or suspect without a strong basis.
This attitude is very important to instill in social life. In Surah Al-Isra’ verse 7 Allah Subḥānahu wa Taʿālā says:
If you do good, then you will do good to yourself, and if you do evil, then the good will be his. When the promise of the afterlife comes, they will not look at your face. And let them enter the mosque as they entered it the first time, and let them purify above all things.
Arabic Latin: In a Ṃṇstum, a Ṃṇstum of rubbish, thestum, aastum of lahā, fast liyasy liyasur.’
It means: If you do good, (it means) you have done good for yourself. If you do evil, (the losses from evil) return to yourself…
This verse emphasizes that all actions, including morals and attitudes, will return to the perpetrator himself, whether good or bad.
Positive Impact of Husnudzon
Husnudzon’s attitude is not just a moral teaching, but has a real impact on life:
-
Strengthen inner relationships – When we see goodness in other people, the relationship will automatically feel closer and full of empathy.
-
Develop a sense of trust – People who always think positively will be more easily trusted because they will not be suspicious without evidence.
-
Strengthening brotherhood – Husnudzon helps maintain harmony in society and strengthens ties of brotherhood between fellow Muslims.
Husnudzon Law in Islam
In a hadith narrated by Imam Bukhari, the Prophet Ṣallallāhu ʿAlaihi Wa Sallam said:
“Do not have bad prejudices, because actually bad prejudices are the most lying words.” (HRBukhari)
This hadith is a strong warning so that we always guard our hearts and minds from unfounded prejudice. Bad prejudices can give birth to slander, trigger conflict, and create unnecessary hatred.
Be kind to Allah Subḥānahu wa Taʿālā and Rasulullah Ṣallallāhu ʿAlaihi Wa Sallam. must for every Muslim. This shows how important it is to fully believe in all the commandments and prohibitions in Islamic teachings. We must believe that all the decrees from Allah Subḥānahu wa Taʿālā and Rasulullah Ṣallallāhu ʿAlaihi Wa Sallam are for our good.
As for husnudzon towards fellow human beings, this is the law legitimate Or maybe, but it is highly recommended. This attitude brings great benefits in forming a society that respects each other and is far from slander and hostility. On the other hand, su’udzon towards others the law is harambecause it can cause hatred and damage the Islamic brotherhood.
Let’s be strong, guard our tongues, and instill good thoughts in every step we take. Because husnudzon is part of the morals of Rasulullah Ṣallallāhu ʿAlaihi Wa Sallam and a reflection of piety to Allah Subḥānahu wa Taʿālā.
