Three Malaysian foreigners could not be contacted, thought to be in Aceh or North Sumatra

KUALA LUMPUR, 1 Dec (Bernama) — The Malaysian Consulate General in Medan received reports from the public about three Malaysian tourists – two men and a woman aged between 63 and 64 years – who had not been contacted since 27 November.

In its statement on Monday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, better known as Wisma Putra, said initial information stated that the three people were believed to be in Aceh or North Sumatra.

“The Indonesian Consulate General is working with local authorities to confirm their whereabouts and provide necessary assistance,” according to Wisma Putra.

The ministry also informed that it was closely monitoring developments following the recent floods and landslides in West Sumatra, which involved a separate incident involving a missing Malaysian citizen.

It was confirmed that a Malaysian citizen, Asrul Nizam Apridwson, 30, was reported missing after being involved in a landslide in Padang Panjang on November 27.

“The Consulate General is cooperating with local authorities in ongoing search and rescue operations,” according to the statement.

The Ministry said that, based on preliminary information, the vehicle in which the victim and seven Indonesian citizens who were believed to be family members were traveling was hit by a landslide.

Four Indonesian passengers are known to be safe, while the search operation continues for the Malaysian victim and three more Indonesian citizens who have not been found.

“The victim’s parents are now in Padang and the Indonesian Consulate General is providing appropriate assistance and support to the family while they are there,” according to Wisma Putra.

Meanwhile, the Ministry appealed to Malaysian citizens in the affected areas of North Sumatra, West Sumatra and Aceh to be vigilant, always alert and obey all local government instructions.

“Families of Malaysian citizens who are in the affected areas and cannot contact their family members are advised to immediately contact the Indonesian Consulate General in Medan to ask for help, especially since the bad weather forecast is expected to continue,” added the statement.

The Consulate can be contacted by telephone at +62 823-6164-6046 (24 hours) or by email at mwmedan@kln.gov.my.
