Urged to Isytihar ‘National Disaster’, Prabowo Affirms Capable of Handling Sumatran Floods
The President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto announced that there are calls for the floods in Sumatra to be declared a National Disaster, reports Kumparan News.
So far, the number of victims in West Sumatra, North Sumatra and Aceh has exceeded 1,000 people.
Prabowo also said that many other heads of state had offered assistance to deal with the disaster in Sumatra
“I have been contacted by many heads of state who want to provide assistance
“I thank you for your attention, but we are capable. Indonesia is able to handle it,” he said during the Plenary Cabinet Session at the State Palace, Monday.
Meanwhile, Prabowo emphasized that the situation is now under control and he will continue to monitor the rehabilitation process.
“There are parties who demand that this disaster be declared a National Disaster
“We have mobilized assistance involving three of the 38 provinces. So, the situation is under control and I will continue to monitor it,” he said again.
Prabowo added that the government has planned to establish an agency or Construction Rehabilitation Task Force in the near future to build temporary accommodation and permanent residences.
Apart from that, he explained, next week, the Indonesian government will build thousands of houses in three areas affected by floods and landslides.
“Starting this week, we will build 2,000 housing units. It is possible that these houses will be used as permanent residences by involving the cooperation of all parties.
“Don’t use it as an excuse regarding land and so on. Just use the available state-owned land,” he said.
