Vietnam prohibits gasoline motorbikes in Hanoi starting in July 2026

The Vietnamese government will establish a ban on the use of motorbikes and gasoline powered scooters in the center of Hanoi City starting July 1, 2026, as announced in the latest direction by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

It is understood that this step is an effort to reduce the deteriorating city pollution of the city.

Hanoi is often registered among the most polluted cities in the world. In addition to dirty air, rivers in the city are also reportedly contaminated above a safe level.

According to a report from the government news portal, the preliminary prohibition will involve the area in the ring road 1 (Ring Road 1) only.

The Prime Minister also ordered the Hanoi People’s Committee to prepare a clear action plan to gradually abolish fossil motorbikes in the middle of -2026.

The implementation phase of the prohibition

July 1, 2026: Gasoline -powered motorbikes and moped ban will begin in the 1 circle road area (ie the main city center).

January 1, 2028: The prohibition will be expanded to the area in the circle of roads 1 and 2, including restrictions on the use of private gasoline cars.

By 2030: Prohibited areas will include 3 road circles.

Preparation for transition

The Hanoi government is directed to provide a special plan called Low release zone (LEZ) Ahead of the third term of 2025.

The awareness campaign will also be launched to help people adapt to this new rules.

Focus on clean transportation

For info, at the end of 2024, Hanoi recorded more than 9.2 million vehicles, including 6.9 million motorbikes and 1.1 million cars registered in the city itself.

In addition, around 1.2 million vehicles from outside also move in Hanoi every day.

As a substitute for gasoline motorbikes, this city will expand the use of buses and electricity trends, as well as building a charger station and maintenance center for clean energy vehicles.

Other additional steps:

  • The registration and parking fee for gasoline vehicles will be raised in Central City at the end of 2025.
