Stages After the Apocalypse » Nabawi Mulia

For every Muslim believer, belief in the coming of the Day of Judgment is a very basic part of the six pillars of faith. This belief is not just a theory, but a belief deeply embedded in the heart that there will come a time when the entire universe will experience total destruction, not a single creature will remain except those willed by Allah Subḥānahu wa Taʿālā.

However, did you know that the destruction of the world is not the end of the journey of human life? In fact, the most important and decisive phase of a servant’s life begins after the Day of Judgment arrives. Humans will continue their long spiritual journey, going through various important stages as a form of accountability for all their deeds while living in this world.

This article will review in more depth and systematically regarding six important stages that humans will experience after the arrival of the Day of Judgment. Understanding these stages will not only strengthen our faith, but also be a very meaningful reminder so that we are more serious about living our lives according to the teachings of Allah Subḥānahu wa Taʿālā and Rasulullah Ṣallallāhu ʿAlaihi Wa Sallam.

Understanding the Beginning of the Journey: From the Spirit Realm to the World Realm

Before discussing the phases of life after the apocalypse, it is important for us to first understand how the human spirit begins its journey. In the book Will we still be in the afterlife? Rizem Aizid’s work states that humans were originally in the realm of the spirit. Then, the spirit is blown into a mother’s womb, and from there the fetus is born into the world.

After living life on earth, humans will die, then move to the underworld—also called the grave. It is there that humans await the arrival of the Day of Judgment. So, when the apocalypse really occurs, what will humans experience?

Six Stages of the Journey After the Apocalypse

The following are the six main phases that every human being will go through after the Day of Judgment, as explained in various authentic Islamic sources:

1. Yaumul Ba’ats (Day of Resurrection)

This is the initial phase of life after the apocalypse. When the trumpet is blown a second time by the Angel Israfil, all humans from the first generation to the last will be raised from their graves.

Allah Subḥānahu wa Taʿālā says in Surah Yā Sīn verse 51:

And the trumpet sounded, and behold, they came down from these events to their God.

Arabic Latin: Wa nufikha fiṣ-ṣụri fa ızā hum minal-ajdāṡi ilā rabbihim yansilụn
It means: “And the trumpet blew, then suddenly they immediately came out of their graves (towards) their God.” (QS. Ya Sin: 51)

2. Yaumul Mahsyar (Day of Gathering of All Humanity)

After being resurrected, all humanity was gathered in Padang Mahsyar. There, there is no hiding place. Everyone, from Prophet Adam ʿAlaihis Salām to the people of Prophet Muhammad Ṣallallāhu ʿAlaihi Wa Sallam, was present without clothes, without shoes, and uncircumcised—as at birth.

Allah Subḥānahu wa Taʿālā says in Surah Az-Zumar verse 69:

And the earth shines with the light of its Lord…

Arabic Latin: Wa asyraqatil-arḍu binụri rabbihā wa wuḍi’al-kitābu wajīa bin-nabiyyīna wasy-syuhadāI wa 2iya bainahum bin-ḥaqqi wa.
It means: “And the earth (mahsyar fields) will be bright with the light (justice) of its Lord; and a book will be given (an account of each individual’s deeds)…” (QS. Az-Zumar: 69)

3. Yaumul Hisab (Day of Charity Retribution)

In this phase, humans are faced with a record of their life’s actions. The Ummah of the Prophet Muhammad Ṣallallāhu ʿAlaihi Wa Sallam was the first community to be counted, and prayer was the first practice to be examined.

Allah Subḥānahu wa Taʿālā says in Surah An-Nur verse 24:

On the day when their tongues, hands and feet will be witnesses against them…

Arabic Latin: Yauma tasy-hadu ‘alaihim alsinatuhum wa aidīhim wa arjuluhum bimā kānû ya’malûn
It means: “On (that) day, their tongues, hands and feet will bear witness to what they used to do.” (QS. An-Nur: 24)

4. Yaumul Mīzān (Day of Weighing Charities)

All human deeds will be weighed accurately, no matter how small, they will not be missed. If the scales of goodness are heavier, then he will be happy.

Allah Subḥānahu wa Taʿālā emphasized in Surah Al-Anbiyā’ verse 47:

And We set the scales fairly…

Arabic Latin: Wa naḍa’ul-mawāzīnal-qisṭa liyaumil-qiyāmati fa lā tuẓlamu jasan syai`ā…
It means: “We will install accurate scales on the Day of Resurrection, so that no one will be harmed in the slightest…” (QS. Al-Anbiyā’: 47)

5. Yaumul Sirāṭ (Day of Passing the Sirath Bridge)

Every human being will cross a very smooth and sharp bridge that stretches over hell. This Shirath can only be passed with charity and mercy from Allah Subḥānahu wa Taʿālā.

the word of God comes in QS. Maryam verse 71:

And there is no one among you except those who enter it…

Arabic Latin: Wa im minkum illā wāriduhā, kana ‘alā rabbika ḥatmam maqḍiyyā(n).
It means: “There is no one among you who does not pass through (hell). That is a decree for your Lord.” (QS. Maryam: 71)

Hadith of Rasulullah Shallallahu Alaihi Wasallam:

I have learned that bridges are sharper than hair and sharper than swords.
“I was told that the bridge is finer than hair and sharper than a sword.” (HR. Muslim)

6. Yaumul Jaza’ (Day of Judgment)

This is the end of all journeys in the afterlife. At this level, humans will get the final answer: will they go to heaven as a gift from Allah Subḥānahu wa Taʿālā, or will they go to hell as punishment for their bad deeds.

Allah Subḥānahu wa Taʿālā says in QS. Al-Jāṡiyah verse 28:

And you will see every nation kneeling…

Arabic Latin: Who gathered the Jāṡiyah ummah, the entire mountain ummah except the book, today we live together
It means: “And (on that day) you saw every ummah prostrating. Every ummah was called to (look at) their charity record book…” (QS. Al-Jāṡiyah: 28)

Conclusion and Invitation

These are the six important stages that every human being will go through after the apocalypse. Knowing and understanding these phases can be a very strong reminder for us to always improve ourselves, increase our faith, and increase our pious deeds.

Because the end of life is not death, but accountability. May Allah Subḥānahu wa Taʿālā make us among the servants who are safe at each stage and blessed with His Heaven full of pleasure.
