From Village Class to World Stage, Three Indigenous Students Win International Robotics Gold

SEPANG, 23 Dec (Bernama) — Three Orang Asli students from Sekolah Kebangsaan Pengkalan Tereh, Kluang, Johor made their country proud on the international stage, when they won the gold medal in the Creative Ideas Category (Lower Level) at the 27th International Robot Olympiad (IRO 2025) in Gold Coast, Australia.

This success was achieved through the creation of a “rover” robot designed to study the surface of Mars, so it was able to beat teams from 15 other countries in this prestigious competition.

The team’s accompanying teacher, Muhammad Fakhri Che Lah, said that this success was beyond expectations and was the result of careful preparation from his students throughout the year.

“Preparations are carried out through continuous training at school, students develop various robot designs based on the space theme, before choosing the most suitable design during the competition,” he told reporters at Kuala Lumpur International Airport after returning home today.

Vyonnie Jezzy team member James Marcel, 12, admitted that he did not expect his team to become champions because the competition task required him and his teammates to act quickly and precisely.

“Some are difficult, some are easy. The time given was four hours, but within three and a half hours we were able to prepare the robot… We used two sensors, namely high screen line and ultrasonic,” he said.

Meanwhile, Director of the Learning Department and Petrosains Satellite Center Norhana Hamim said this success proves the effectiveness of Petrosains’ Tech4All inclusive approach, in empowering Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education.

“What we are seeing today is a very significant success…it shows the effectiveness of this program when these children are given the right platform, a program that suits their background,” he said.

He said this achievement also dispels the stigma that Orang Asli students are unable to compete at the international level.

The Malaysian contingent at IRO 2025 involved 15 Orang Asli students from five elementary schools and also brought home one bronze medal and three Technical Awards as a result of strategic collaboration between Petrosains, the Malaysian Ministry of Education and the Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organization (OPITO).
