Seorang lelaki tempatan berusia 37 tahun ditahan polis selepas disyaki mencampak seorang kanak-kanak perempuan berusia lima tahun ke dalam sungai hingga maut di Kampung Padang, Tanjung Sedili, di sini hari ini.
Ketua Polis Daerah Kota Tinggi, Superintendan Yusof Othman berkata, suspek ditahan selepas pihaknya menerima laporan berhubung kejadian kira-kira jam 9.30 pagi.
Menurutnya, suspek dipercayai mencampak mangsa ke dalam sungai sebelum mengamuk sambil membawa parang dan mengejar seorang lelaki berusia 40 tahun.
“Bertindak atas maklumat, sepasukan polis dari Balai Polis Kuala Sedili pergi ke lokasi kejadian dan menahan suspek.
“Ketika tangkapan dilakukan, berlaku pergelutan yang menyebabkan seorang anggota polis cedera, namun suspek dapat ditahan,” katanya dalam kenyataan hari ini.
Yusof berkata, pembantu pegawai perubatan yang tiba di lokasi kejadian mengesahkan kanak-kanak terbabit meninggal dunia.
Katanya, mayat mangsa dihantar ke Hospital Kota Tinggi sebelum dibawa ke Jabatan Forensik Hospital Pasir Gudang esok bagi tujuan bedah siasat.
“Punca kejadian masih dalam siasatan dan suspek juga dipercayai mempunyai masalah kesihatan mental,” katanya.
Beliau berkata, kes disiasat mengikut Seksyen 302 Kanun Keseksaan.
