Malaysia Open: Aaron-Wooi Yik One Step to End 12 Year Drought
KUALA LUMPUR, 10 Jan (Bernama) — The country’s top men’s doubles pair, Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik, are getting closer to the 2026 Malaysia Open title after advancing to the final tomorrow.
In the semifinals at the Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil today, second seeds Aaron/Wooi Yik advanced to their first Malaysia Open final after defeating sixth seeds from Indonesia Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Shohibul Fikri.
The first set was tight with both pairs drawing 21-21, but the former 2022 world champion remained calm and narrowly won 23-21.
Trailing 10-12 in the second set, the two-time Olympic bronze medalist found rhythm to take a 16-12 lead and delight the home crowd with a 21-18 victory in a hard-fought 50 minutes.
As a result, the world number two pair became the local pair to lift the Malaysia Open men’s doubles title since it was last won by Goh V Shem-Lim Khim Wah in the 2014 edition.
Aaron/Wooi Yik will face top seeds and defending champions Kim Won Ho/Seo Seung Jae from South Korea who advanced to the Malaysia Open final for the second time in a row after beating England’s Ben Lane-Sean Vendy 8-21, 21-11, 21-18.
Speaking to reporters after the match, Aaron expressed his delight at being back in back-to-back finals on home soil, recalling the decisive sets defeat to compatriots Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun 12-21, 21-15, 16-21 at last year’s Malaysia Masters.

Ahead of tomorrow’s final match, Aaron believes both pairs have the same chance referring to their 1-1 head-to-head record.
“Last year they (Won Ho-Seung Jae) performed extraordinary but this is the first tournament of the year. I see it as 50-50 tomorrow. However, we have the advantage of playing at home,” he said.
Wooi Yik admits the pressure is high for the final but they intend to enjoy the match rather than think too much about it.
Meanwhile, Seung Jae blamed a slow start for the British pair’s first set loss while Won Ho set his sights on retaining the title.
