SAR operations on police who were allegedly swept away by strong currents in Sepang continue
SEPANG, 29 Nov (Bernama) — The search and rescue (SAR) operation for a policeman who went missing after being allegedly swept away by a strong current last night was actively carried out by a force of around 60 members from various agencies.
Sepang Police Chief ACP Norhizam Bahaman said the operation involved the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), Malaysian Civil Defense Force (APM), Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) as well as assistance from the Value District Police Headquarters (IPD) and village residents.
He said that SAR operations were reactivated at 07.30 this morning after initial efforts were made after the incident report was received at around 10.30 last night.
“Last night we started SAR at around 23.00 and finished at 04.30 this morning. Until now the 23 year old victim has not been found. We cannot confirm whether the victim drowned or not because there are no clear indications except for personal items in the vehicle which are confirmed to belong to the victim.
“Personal items were found including ‘bags’ containing police identity cards, operational shoes and jackets,” he told reporters after conducting a survey at the incident location in Giching Village, today.

Norhizam said that to date, firefighters have carried out four dives, in addition to the ‘flushing’ effort which was carried out along the river towards the Labu Advance solar power plant area, which is 2.5 kilometers (km) from the incident location because of the possibility that the victims would be swept away further.
He said, based on witness statements, the victim was seen holding on to a sign near his car before being swept away by the strong current during the incident.
Asked whether the victim would not be found today, Norhizam said the JBPM Air Unit would be deployed and detection dogs (K9) would be used, but this method would depend on the water level, which is currently receding.
“Search efforts will continue until the victim is found and we really appreciate the cooperation of all agencies who are taking turns to help,” he said.
He said, based on initial information, the victim who was on duty at IPD Value was on his way to work after visiting his family here.
Police are classifying the case as a missing person and will update developments from time to time, he said.
Media reported that a car driver allegedly drowned after failing to swim and leaving the Perodua Bezza he was driving in which plunged into a ditch in a flooded area near the Giching Village Clinic, last night.
