SEA Games 2025: Jonah Wins Gold, Sets New SEA Games Record
BANGKOK, Dec 13 (Bernama) — National men’s shot put champion Jonah Chang Rigan is in a class of his own after winning a gold medal and breaking a games record at the 2025 Thailand SEA Games at the Suphachalasai Stadium here tonight.
The Sarawak-born athlete secured gold after throwing 18.78 meters (m) on the third attempt thus erasing Filipino athlete William III Edward Morrison’s games record of 18.38m set in the 2019 edition in the Philippines.
His record in appearing for the second time at the SEA Games also erased his own national record of 18.46m which he set at the Pahang Open Athletics Championship last year.
Home athlete Silamool Thongchai won the silver medal in the event with a throw of 16.80m, while Morrison won bronze.
Jonah’s success in winning gold made the 22 year old athlete even better when he finished fourth at his SEA Games debut in Cambodia two years ago.
This was the third gold at the national athletics concentration after Grace Wong Xiu Mei and Nani Sahirah Maryata won gold in the women’s hammer throw and women’s shot put respectively.
Meanwhile, Ng Jing Xuan won a silver medal in the javelin throw with a throw that broke the national record.
The Thai athlete bagged the gold medal with a throw of 55.64m while Jing Xuan came second with a personal best of 52.17m thereby setting a new national record.
Jing Xuan erased the national record of 49.34m previously held by Siti Nur Nadiah Othman.
Bronze belongs to Espenilla Ana Bhianca from the Philippines with a throw of 51.66m.
