Two victims of the Sabah earthquake returned to Mount Kinabalu after a decade
KOTA KINABALU – Two former Tanjong Katong elementary school students, Singapore who survived the earthquake tragedy on Mount Kinabalu in 2015 returned to the top of the mountain to end the climbing as a result of disasters.
Emyr Uzayr and Prajesh Dhimant Patel, both aged 21, are part of 29 Tanjong Katong elementary school students who were involved in the expedition to Mount Kinabalu 10 years ago. Unfortunately, an earthquake measuring 6.0 produced two teachers and seven of their friends, with Singapore coach.
Emyr, who suffered skull cracks and back injuries, was saved and flown back to Singapore. 10 years later, the teenager returned with a different spirit.
“I know in my heart, I must return. Not only to respect my friends, but also to get peace,” said Emyr, now the first year’s financial student at the National University of Singapore (NUS).
Prajesh, currently students at the University of Singapore Management (SMU), also responded to Emyr’s request to end the delayed mission.
They started climbing on May 20 around 8:30 am and arrived at Laban on average about six hours later. Emyr shares that the current route is safer with the addition of security fences, more regular inspections and patrols.
However, emotional burden is far more severe than physical challenges.
“I know that every step will restore memory. But running away from fear is not a solution,” he said.
On the way, they also met with several mountain leaders who helped in rescue efforts during the past. Some of them did not work at the time, but were still climbing mountains to provide assistance.
“What they describe the same as what I see. Chaos, courage and mercy,” Emyr said.
The earthquake, which occurred on June 5, 2015, also claimed the lives of six Malaysians, a Chinese and Japanese. The tragedy was remembered through the Singapore National Commemoration Day on June 8, 2015.
That experience changes Emyr’s life forever.
“I have lost friends and excited dreams. Now, I try to live fully and bring their memories in everything I do,” he said in the sense.
